Everything patients ask us before their first visit — insurance, the GLP-1 program, telemedicine, and what to expect. Don’t see your question? Contact us or call (256) 767-5940.

Getting Started

Appointments & New Patients

Do I need a referral?

For most insurance plans, no referral is needed. Some plans — including BCBS/Obamacare plans — do require one from your primary care physician.

What happens at my first appointment?

We’ll review your new-patient paperwork, measure your resting metabolism with a 10-minute breathing test, and build a personalized plan around nutrition, activity, behavior, and medication.

What forms do I need to bring?

You can fill out your new-patient paperwork ahead of time on our New Patient Forms page, or complete it in the office before your visit.

How far in advance do I need to cancel?

Please give us at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule.

Insurance & Cost

Coverage & Payment

What insurance do you accept?

We accept Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and most major insurance plans. Call us or bring your insurance card by our insurance department in office and we’ll confirm your specific coverage.

Does Medicare cover GLP-1 medications?

Yes — through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program. Reach out through our Contact Us page and we’ll confirm your specific coverage before you’re billed for anything.

What if my insurance doesn’t cover GLP-1 medications?

We’ll walk you through cash-pay and manufacturer savings-card options at your visit so cost never comes as a surprise.

Treatment

The Weight-Loss Program

How is this different from just being prescribed a GLP-1 medication?

We start with an in-office metabolism test, then build a plan around nutrition, activity, and behavior — medication included where appropriate, not the whole plan.

How often will I need to come in?

Typically monthly visits until you reach maintenance, so Dr. Jarrell can adjust your plan and monitor your progress along the way.

What if I have side effects from my medication?

Call our office — Dr. Jarrell reviews GLP-1 side effects with patients directly and can adjust your dose or plan as needed.

Do you help once I reach my goal weight?

Yes. We continue seeing patients through the maintenance phase to help keep the weight off long-term.

Telemedicine

Virtual Visits

Can I do telemedicine instead of coming in?

Yes — we offer virtual visits through Spruce Health. Many insurance plans cover it; cash-pay pricing is available otherwise. Learn more on our Telemedicine page.

Is the metabolism test required, even for telemedicine patients?

The in-office breathing test gives us the most accurate starting point, so we recommend at least one in-person visit even if the rest of your care happens virtually.
